Obstetric & Gynaecological Ultrasound




Designed for health professionals who have an interest in obstetric ultrasound, this 5 day course will have you examining all trimesters of pregnancy. Develop and master transabdominal and transvaginal techniques to acquire, interpret, document and apply ultrasound to clinical management and improve patient care. Identify pathology, multiple pregnancy and pregnancy of unknown location. Locate correct planar anatomy & measure fetal biometry, AFI and Dopplers. Consolidate your skills with our mastery approach to learning, with hands-on practical scanning on real patients. This course allows you time to consolidate skills over the 5 days.




  • System orientation and probe manipulation techniques
  • Assessment of the normal uterus and adnexa transabdominally 

Early pregnancy assessment

  • Transabdominal and transvaginal techniques

Third Trimester-

    • Identifying the cervix & placental location
    • Fetal location and lie
    • Fetal Biometry
    • Fetal Anatomy
    • Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)
    • Cord Doppler




On completion of the course the student should be able to:


Early Pregnancy

  • Identify & examine an intrauterine pregnancy with a heartbeat present
  • Describe the criteria for failed pregnancy
  • Describe pregnancy of unknown location
  • Commence scanning on transvaginal phantoms


Monitoring the Fetus (2nd & 3rdTrimester)

  • Identify & measure the cervix  length

Identify & examine the placenta

Describe some placenta, cord & cervix- variants & pathology

  • Discuss translabial scanning  
  • Establish fetal lie and locate fetal structures 
  • Identify & record cardiac activity
    • M-mode
    • Pulsed Wave ( > 12 weeks)
  • Locate correct planar anatomy & measure fetal biometry (BPD, HC, AC & FL & EFW)
  • Identify normal fetal anatomy & some abnormal fetal anatomy in the following regions fetal head, heart, abdomen, pelvis, spine & limbs via presentations and case based learning
  • Identify signs of fetal wellbeing
  • Scan & measure the Amniotic Fluid Index
  • Scan & measure the umbilical artery cord Doppler
  • Be aware of the limitations of point of care ultrasound and when to on-refer the patient

Eligible for Rural Procedural Grants funding under all components.

Procedural GPs can receive $2000 per day, for up to 10 days of training per financial year, and GPs providing hospital based emergency services can receive up to three days of eligible training per financial year.
