Associate Professor John Svigos AM

After graduation from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1970 worked as a Resident Medical Officer at the Royal Adelaide Hospital

 

In 1971 and 1972 served as a National Serviceman with the rank of Captain in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC)

 

1972 – 1975 worked at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital under Professor Lloyd Cox specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as a Generalist with a special interest in Reproductive Medicine initially and later in Maternal Fetal Medicine.

 

1976 worked as a Senior Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa

 

1977- 1978 worked as the Staff Obstetrician of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital

 

1978 entered private practice with a Visiting Obstetrician position at The Queen Hospital until 1988 before moving to the then Queen Victoria Hospital (later the Women’s and Children’s Hospital from 1995 onwards), retiring from private practice in

 

2017 and from the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, in 2018.

 

In addition to the enjoyable time spent working in private and public hospital practice, during his professional career he was fortunate to do short term sabbaticals at selected perinatal centres in USA (particularly in Denver, Colorado and in Chapel Hill, North Carolina), at the Christian Medical College(CMC) & Hospital, Vellore (S India), Adventist Hospital (Penang), Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine, Dept. Ob/Gyn (Istanbul), Kerala, (SW India) and continues to have a long-term commitment in Indonesia (in Bali and East Java in Malang and Surabaya).

 

Was honoured to receive the Dr Ida Scudder Medal (FOGSI), SA Reproductive Medicine Hall of Fame Award, President’s Medal (RANZCOG), Order of Australia (AM), Prof Krishna Menon Medal (Kerala OGS), Honorary Professorship, University of Udayana (Indonesia) and Life Fellowship RANZCOG.

 

Has had published over 75 papers in refereed journals, an author of several book chapters while currently serving on the Editorial boards of a number of international scientific journals and as a RANZCOG Examiner, Expert Witness, Advisor to the Accreditation and Training Committee and Global Health Committee and Convenor of the RANZCOG Birth Master Class National Workshops.

 

Since 2018 has been working with SA Rural Health in Port Augusta and Gawler Hospitals and locally in Adelaide at the Lyell McEwin Hospital as a Senior Visiting Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.

 

Currently coordinates the teaching, course content and examinations of V year Medical Students, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Adelaide.

 

Still continues with his long-standing commitment as Visiting Professor, Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia and as an External Examiner, Indonesian College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (InaCOG).
