Program description

A two-day program, which is constantly revised to reflect current practice, is designed for physicians interested in ultrasound techniques useful in life threatening scenarios.

This intensive program provides participants with tuition in basic physical principles, understanding of sonographic planes, terminology, measurements and probe manipulation skills, along with techniques involved in ultrasound Basic Echo in Life Support and Lung ultrasound, the "LCI approach" (lung, cardiac and IVC). There is an emphasis on the practical aspects of these topics with comprehensive "hands-on" tuition, led by expert sonographers. Low student/tutor ratios ensure comprehensive practical tuition in a personalised fashion.

Specific topics include

  • Physical principles & knobology
  • Probe manipulation techniques
  • Sonographic appearances & terminology
  • Basic cardiac scanning techniques (Basic Echo in Life Support)
  • Lung ultrasound

Course objectives

  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis

  •  Identify the physical principles, artefact sand the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound

  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions 

  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions

  • Perform basic B-mode assessment of cardiac chambers, IVC measurement and lung scanning. 

  • Differentiate  normal  heart  from  major  cardiovascular  pathology,  particularly  in  the critically ill patients

  • Describe limitations and pitfalls of BELS protocol.

  • Recognize situations when a referral for a second opinion is indicated.

Procedural GPs can receive $2000 per day, for up to 10 days of training per financial year, and GPs providing hospital based emergency services can receive up to three days of eligible training per financial year.

 Electronic logbook services with expert feedback 

To help maintain & improve your skills we offer an online ultrasound mentoring service so that our experienced staff can guide your hand by giving critical feedback on your uploaded images. The logged cases can then be saved on the AIU site to be used as a personal electronic logbook for future credentialing purposes.
