Program Description:

Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is an essential tool in the medical armamentarium for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Although proficiency in POCUS requires time allocated in both theoretical and practical aspects, a well-founded grounding in basic techniques lays the foundation for a safe and effective ultrasound practice. This course was designed for emergency medicine and general physicians who aim to incorporate beside ultrasound assessment in their practice. There is an emphasis on practical aspects led by expert sonographers and clinicians. Low student/tutor rate (4:1) ensure reasonable hands-on ultrasound practice, which increases attendance’s confidence of providing safe and focused bedside assessment. In short, this course is ideal for those who strive for safety and excellence in medical practice.

Program Content:

  1. Review of physical principles of ultrasound and probe manipulation
  2. Aorta
  3. EFAST protocol
    1. Renal tract
    2. Biliary tract
    3. Spleen
    4. Liver
    5. Male & female pelvis

 Program objectives:

  1. Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis
  2. Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound
  3. Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  4. Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
