Description

The Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (eFAST) ultrasound course is a one-day, hands-on program for clinicians managing trauma and acute presentations. Originally developed to rapidly assess unstable trauma patients, eFAST is now one of the most widely used point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) techniques, with applications far beyond its original scope.

On this course you will:

  • Detect free fluid in the abdominal cavity, pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and pneumothorax
  • Gain confidence in identifying the key abdominal and thoracic windows through supervised scanning on live patient models
  • Understand common artefacts along with false positives and false negatives
  • Apply safe ultrasound practices and recognise limitations in diagnosis

This eFAST ultrasound course requires no prior experience and provides the foundation to safely integrate eFAST into your clinical practice — as well as a strong base for progressing into advanced ultrasound training.

Objectives

The objectives of this eFAST ultrasound course are:

  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound and its limitations in medical diagnosis;
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound;
  • Practice hands-on ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions;
  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions;
  • Perform eFAST ultrasound techniques;
  • Acquire images obtained on normal adult patient models and phantoms;
  • Interpret images from normal adult patient models;
  • Recognise the variants and abnormalities from presentations and case-based learning;
  • Document the ultrasound findings;
  • Equip the learner with the foundation skills to begin to incorporate the ultrasound skills with the clinical situation to make appropriate management decisions.
