Description
Is there tamponade, right heart failure, left heart failure, massive pulmonary embolism or hypovolemia? These are five vital questions in the acute care of critical illness. This Lung & FELS ultrasound course teaches you simple heart views to answer these questions, and how to cross reference with IVC scanning, to reinforce your interpretation.
Lung ultrasound is becoming the stethoscope of the 21st century and can revolutionise your practice. Common emergency presentations including sepsis, trauma, dyspnoea and resuscitation can all be guided and enhanced by the skills acquired with lung ultrasound. Learn how to scan for pleural pathologies including effusions, oedema and consolidation and learn how to safely interpret findings for fast, safe and effective clinical interpretation.
During this 2-day course, you will practice these skills on a range of different patients. At the conclusion, you should be able to scan, label, save and interpret a set of scans that support your clinical decision.
This is not a comprehensive echocardiography course, but it is an important beginning. FELS & Lung ultrasound will teach you the paradigms that underpin problem based multi-system scanning. This course is all about learning what you don’t know, what you need to know, and what you need to practice safely.

Objectives
The objectives of this FELS & Lung ultrasound course are:
- Select correct probe and protocol for the clinical question;
- Perform Lung and FELS ultrasound scanning protocols;
- Demonstrate appropriate image acquisition on patient models with a variety of body habitus;
- Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound;
- Recognise the different artefacts and synthesise the pattern to postulate the disease;
- Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions;
- Equip the learner with the foundation skills to begin to incorporate the ultrasound skills with the clinical situation to make appropriate patient management decisions;
- Demonstrate ability to interpret images through case-based discussion;
- Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound and its limitations in medical diagnosis.
