Introduction to Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (POCUS)

DESCRIPTION

Point of Care ultrasound (POCUS) is a real time, non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic tool which involves both theoretical and practical domains. Currently, POCUS is an expected component of the emergency physician skills. However, sometimes, it is hard to attend long courses when you have a busy schedule and specific ultrasound learning needs. This course was designed for those who only need to integrate Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm (AAA), Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access, Extended Focused Abdominal Scan for Trauma (E-FAST) and Basic Echocardiography in Life Support (BELS) into their clinical practice. Each day you will learn how to recognise, acquire and interpret a diagnostic quality scan set, so that you can return home and start safe proctored practice. As you require a well-founded grounding in basic scanning techniques this course emphasises on practical aspects led by expert sonographers and clinicians. A low student to tutor ratio (4:1) ensures reasonable hands-on ultrasound practice on a diverse volunteer population, which increases attendance’s confidence of providing safe and focused bedside ultrasound assessment.

CONTENT

  • Introduction of physical principles of ultrasound and probe manipulation
  • Abdominal aortic Aneurysm
  • Vascular Access
  • Extended Focused Abdominal Scan for Trauma (E-FAST) protocol
  • Basic Echo in Life support (BELS)

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course the attendees should be able to:Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound and its limitations in medical diagnosisIdentify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound.Practice “hands on” ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questionsRecognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questionsPerform AAA, Guided Vascular Access, E-FAST and BELS ultrasound techniquesAcquire images obtained on normal adult volunteers & phantomsInterpret images from normal adult volunteersRecognise the variants and abnormalities from presentations and case-based learning.Document the ultrasound findingsEquip the learner with the foundation skills to begin to incorporate the ultrasound skills with the clinical situation to make appropriate management decisions
