Description

This sonographer-led, one-day program is tailored for midwives and nurses interested in gaining practical skills in third trimester ultrasound. The course emphasises a systematic approach to scanning, with a focus on hands-on practice using real patient models at varying gestations within the third trimester.

Participants will learn in small group sessions, ensuring personalised guidance in a supportive, practical learning environment. The course covers key techniques for fetal assessment, placental evaluation, and identifying fetal well-being, providing essential skills for performing point-of-care ultrasound in clinical settings.

Objectives

The objectives of this third trimester ultrasound course are:

  • Perform system orientation and demonstrate correct probe manipulation for third trimester ultrasound.
  • Identify and measure cervical length using transabdominal scanning techniques.
  • Locate and examine the placenta, and describe any placental variants observed.
  • Determine fetal presentation, including fetal number, situs, and lie.
  • Identify key fetal structures and confirm fetal position and anatomy.
  • Assess and record cardiac activity using M-mode and PW Doppler techniques.
  • Measure the Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) and Deepest Vertical Pocket (DVP).
  • Recognise signs of fetal well-being during ultrasound scanning.
  • Understand the limitations of point-of-care ultrasound and identify when to refer patients for further evaluation.

The prior ultrasound experience assumed for this course is highlighted below.
